SPECT is raising funds to purchase reusable protective gowns for health care workers in resource constrained countries. SPECT supports the development of innovative methods to sterilize instruments that are low cost and can be easily maintained within the hospital or clinic.
The gowns are included in a kit of essential items that are given to health care workers so they can safely and effectively reprocess surgical instruments and medical devices.
From 2013 to 2018, SPECT trained over 500 health care workers from 170 facilities in 8 resource constrained countries; none of which had available long-sleeved protective gowns for their sterile processing staff prior to the training. In addition to protecting health care workers, the gowns help to prevent the spread of infections throughout healthcare facilities.
More about Christina and Spect
Christina Fast is an energetic young woman from Calgary, AB who is dedicated to bettering the lives of others and is passionate about health care and caring for those in need. Her love of traveling and her love for her job took her to West Africa where she volunteered with Africa Mercy Ships, joining 450 international crew members onboard the world’s largest hospital ship. It was in the sterilization room that she met Jane McIntosh, of Pender Island, BC who introduced her to the GreenAngels wood chopping team.
Christina's experience on board the Mercy Ships, and especially her visits to some of the hospitals where she saw the lack of sterilization procedures and resources, led her to found SPECT: Sterile Processing Education Charitable Trust. SPECT was established to support education related to effective sterile processing and infection control practices in hospitals and clinics in resource-limited countries such as Guinea, Sierra Leone, Congo and Madagascar. GreenAngels wood choppers, along with their partners, funded the legal fees for the establishment of the organization.
"Our belief is that by providing education, mentoring and resources to health care workers, we will empower them to develop and maintain safe sterile practices within their medical community. SPECT dedicates itself to the promotion of the highest quality of reprocessing possible within limited resource settings to ensure patient safety and wellbeing. In addition, SPECT supports the development of innovative methods to sterilize instruments that are low cost and can be easily maintained within the hospital or clinic."
SPECT has recently earned distinguished awards including:
First Avenue’s Top 40 Under 40,
