A 5-day course is being offered at Poets Cove Resort, coordinated by the Southern Gulf Islands Community Resource Centre, hand in hand with the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council and the W̱SÁNEĆ Tribal School. Donations to this program will allow 16 W̱SÁNEĆ and island youth to attend this unprecedented and impactful program.
The course will take the traditional W̱SÁNEĆ knowledge and wisdom and combine it with current climate science. ṮEṮÁĆES - "Relatives Of The Deep" in SENĆOŦEN, refers to the W̱SÁNEĆ creation story where what we now call the Gulf Islands were created by XÁLS (the sacred creator) as relatives for the W̱SÁNEĆ to look after and in turn these relatives would look after the people. This reciprocal stewardship model will bring a holistic perspective to the course.
The curriculum includes presentations from the W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations and each of the four Southern Gulf Islands, focusing on climate action strategies to mitigate some of the adverse impacts of climate change.
The course will promote inter-island communication and collaboration to respond to the "climate emergency" for the islands that has been declared by the Capital Regional District, the Islands Trust and the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council.
The future belongs to our young people and this course will provide them with traditional knowledge, encouragement and support to take action on climate change.
